Larry Welo

Larry Welo was born in Hibbing, Minnesota in 1951. He studied art at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he also began his career as a professional artist. Welo established his studio in 1976 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved to Blue Mounds, Wisconsin in 1994 where he presently works from his studio.

Larry has been making prints since 1971. His work is based on places he sees frequently. Numerous sketches are made on location, and in the studio finished compositions are developed. Many ideas are worked on extensively, and a few of these are eventually developed into etchings.

"My etchings have always been inspired by various aspects of my life; they are, in a sense, self portraits. My imagery is rooted in the natural world. I create my etchings by drawing directly onto the copper plate while observing my subject. My images are not intended to be duplications of the world, but instead interpretations of it. It is important to me that the creative process be a voyage of discovery, always looking in new directions and following new avenues."

Welo's etchings may be found in numerous collections world wide.
