Dean Schwarz, an internationally known ceramic artist, received a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Northern Iowa in 1960, and a Master of Arts degree in 1961. Schwarz lives in Decorah, Iowa working from his studio with his two sons, Gunnar and Lane.

His pottery encompasses Greek Myths, Peruvian legends, Iowan traditions, Korean dances and Bauhaus principles. Schwarz's work is primarily wheel thrown, individually decorated, precisely glazed and fired, each piece reflecting the role of art in our daily lives.
